Ever since 1.8.0 came out in 2014, it has been very good for modpack authors. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and we're stuck in this sort of limbo while the mods are being split between 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9.If your currently modding for 1.9.4, that means you'll have a jump-start on the 1.10 port. If you're still on 1.7.10, I just have one thing to say to you, and that is why not in December? If all the mod authors currently active for 1.7.10 focused on 1.8.9 development back in December, we would have stable and full 1.9 packs by now. If you're already on 1.8.9 but fear porting to 1.9.4, it's not that bad at all, just try it.

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what other modders plan on doing about the whole 1.10 situation. Really if we want to avoid this, our only option is to move to another game, which probably will never happen. No matter what we do, the community will be fragmented between 3+ versions now.

They may say that this is not the case, which is true when just looking at the part about porting to a new minecraft version as there will be less changes in minecraft itself. Based on what I've hard, updates between 1.8/1.9 versions were pretty easy in terms of minecraft itself.Holding back on updates would also be not a good idea as they will also contain bugfixes.But the main issue I currently see is that Forge will not be able to keep up with the demands of a fast release cycle. But updates should still be pretty fast. Like they could release a smaller feature update every 1-3 months or so with a few new blocks, bugfixes and such, but still develop large changes in the background, which get merged once done.
The outcome is now that mods which use it in 1.8, 1.8.9 or 1.9.0 and depend on it, are currently unable to port to 1.9.4 at all. Let's say due to some communication mistakes.With 1.10 on the door, there is no guarantee that it will ever be merged into 1.9.4 due to some current time constraints. There is currently no release available for 1.9.4 available because it was planned to be merged into forge with 1.9.4.
So it might be an idea to say "everything has to go through the release build pipeline to ensure nothing breaks" and afterwards hand it of to some QA guys (if mojang handles it so. It can purely be an improvement for mojang.Like I already encountered with certain java compilers creating broken builds. So you might see something like "1.14 will be skipped by all tech mods because the main dependency is missing" (or end up with 5 different and incompatible ports of it) and then 1.15 will leave out decorative blocks, because minecraft itself now supports adding simple blocks with just data and no code at all, but forge is missing full support for it, which will only happen with 1.16.Don't look at it from a moddding point of view. Say the dev is no longer active, the dev does not like that new update, it's scheduled to be merged into forge but not happening, or other stuff.At this point this has to possibility of holding many mods back for a single or more versions. There will be an increase in shared libraries or at least there has to be one to handle faster release cycles and prevent the usual "not invented here" syndrome, because it will put the workload for updates on more persons and not everyone has to port their own system, which will be identical to 95% compared to many other systems around.But just like MCMP or RF, they might not get ported at first due to whatever reasons. But this means that they are incompatible with eachother and it is pretty likely that devs might add some of their own features to it, making it even hard to go back later to a single API.And these issues will increase.

Then being able to catch useless bug reports before they reach a developer is a huge improvement.How this applies to mods is then pretty unimportant (for Mojang). But even Mojang is not that small anymore and at some point they have to split responsibilities. Also more helpful in a bug report compared to just "hey, this fence is broken".This is just a wild guess. Or see that the rotations are correct, so the renderer might be broken.
